Barolo oogstjaar 2020 kenmerkt zich door regen
Het groeiseizoen begon met een milde, zachte winter. In januari werd op sommige plekken zelfs de hoogste temperatuur in 50 jaar gemeten. Ook de voorjaarsmaanden waren relatief droog en zonnig. Tegen de zomer echter begon het kouder te worden en viel er veel regen. En ook al waren er veel onweersbuien, de familie Gaja is blij te kunnen vertellen dat er dit jaar nu eens geen wijngaarden beschadigden door hagel.
Daarna werd het wat warmer dan gebruikelijk, maar ook weer niet extreem. Begin oktober viel er weer veel regen, veel meer dan gangbaar is in dit gebied. Het stelde producenten voor een moeilijke keus. Al oogsten of nog even wachten? Dit jaar kenmerkt zich dan ook deels door het natte weer.
De oogst van de nebbiolo vond bij Gaja plaats van 18 september tot 8 oktober. Bij Luigi Einaudi vond de oogst plaats tussen 10 en 15 oktober. We stellen hieronder 6 Barolo’s uit 2020 van deze befaamde producenten aan je voor.
2020 is bovenal elegant
Beide Baroloproducenten zijn blij met het fruit dat ze hebben mogen oogsten. De Barolo’s uit 2020 hebben (gemiddeld genomen) een medium body, zijn prachtig in balans en zeer elegant.

Gaja spreekt van ‘atypisch jaar’
Er wordt altijd reikhalzend uitgekeken naar de nieuwe jaargang Barolo van een van de meest revolutionaire wijnhuizen in Italië – recentelijk nog op de 10e plek geëindigd van Most Admired Wine Brands 2024 (Drinks International). Dat is nu niet anders. Volgens Gaia Gaja, die samen met haar broer en zus het door haar vader Angelo Gaja opgerichte wijnhuis bestiert, is 2020 een heel goed, maar ‘atypisch’ jaar. Met als grote pluspunt de vroege toegankelijkheid van de wijn.
Reeks Luigi Einaudi is ‘erg sterk’
‘A great wine can only come from a great vineyard and a great terroir’, is de gevleugelde uitspraak van Luigi Einaudi. Achterkleinzoon Matteo Sardegna weet dat het waar is en heeft de afgelopen jaren flinke stappen gezet naar een meer klassieke stijl Barolo. Matteo vindt het een ‘uitstekend jaar met uitmuntende uitschieters’. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) beaamt dat: de reeks Barolo 2020 van Einaudi is door hem als ‘erg sterk’ beoordeeld.

The wine shows nice complexity, and the tannins are young but ripe from a phenolic perspective. Het warme jaar heeft gezorgd voor een sterke fruitexpressie. De wijn is nog ietsje gesloten in de neus, maar zal zich ongetwijfeld snel gaan openen. Het is een heel elegante wijn, met een mooie floraliteit. Wat ook opvalt: het is een hele transparante, zuivere wijn. Er zijn nog geen scores bekend van deze wijn.
