2022: zwaar, streng, maar opmerkelijk samenhangend
“2022 was een zwaar, streng, maar opmerkelijk samenhangend jaar. We hadden nog nooit een oogst zo heet en droog gezien: temperaturen constant boven het gemiddelde, een gebrek aan water van begin tot eind. De omstandigheden waren extreem, maar stabiel. Geen echte verrassingen. De wijnstok kon zich aanpassen en dat tempo de hele tijd aanhouden: hij groeide weinig, ontwikkelde kleine bladeren en compacte trossen, met bessen waarvan de dikke schil zeer bestand was tegen zonnebrand. Het werd een vroege oogst — de oogst begon rond half september — maar verrassend anders dan andere warme jaargangen uit het verleden”, legt Gaia Gaja uit.
Wat dat voor de wijnen betekent? Gaia: “Ze tonen geen gekookt fruit, noch overtollige balsamico-excessen of brandende alcohol. Integendeel, ze tonen versheid, levendig fruit, structuur en elegante tannines. Het zijn bijna klassieke wijnen, wat ongelooflijk is voor zo’n niet-klassieke jaargang. Vlezig, aards, compact, krachtig — vooral in Serralunga, waar die kracht met bijzondere intensiteit wordt uitgedrukt. Het was een jaargang van voortdurende stress, maar constante stress. En juist deze consistentie stelde de wijnstok in staat zichzelf te organiseren, zijn eigen verhouding te vinden.”
2023: vijf verschillende jaargangen in één seizoen
Gaia: “Als 2022 het jaar van stil uithoudingsvermogen was, was 2023 iets heel anders: het voelde alsof we vijf verschillende jaargangen in één seizoen meemaakten. De winter was mild en droog, genoeg om ons te laten vrezen voor een herhaling van 2022. Vervolgens kwam er van mei tot juli overvloedige regenval samen met ondergemiddelde temperaturen. Begin juli trof een hevige hagelbui het gebied, waarbij de meeste wijngaarden bijna puur door geluk werden gespaard. Augustus bracht een scherpe daling van de temperaturen, gevolgd door een golf van verzengende hitte in de laatste week van de maand. September en oktober voelden eindelijk weer als zomer. De rijping vertraagde en de oogst van nebbiolo begon pas begin oktober. Deze jaargang volgde geen rechte lijn, maar was een constante afwisseling van stops en starts. Hoe kom je dan tot het einde van zo’n jaar? Door het vermogen om te reageren. De wijnstok leerde fase voor fase het evenwicht te hervinden telkens wanneer dat werd uitgedaagd.”
“Misschien is dit het meest verrassende aspect: het meest discontinu, ogenschijnlijk het moeilijkste jaar is ook het jaar dat onverwacht gebalanceerde wijnen oplevert. Verfijnde, elegante wijnen met intense tonen van fruit en bloemen, extreem zachte tannines, een structuur die niet weelderig is maar goed gedefinieerd. Wijnen waar de gratie en fijnheid van nebbiolo volledig naar voren komen.”

Made entirely with Cabernet Sauvignon, the Gaja 2023 Langhe Darmagi delivers the classic richness you expect of the variety, yet it remains remarkably streamlined and refined. The bouquet reveals dark fruit with delicate floral notes of rose petal, while the palate is polished and silky with beautifully integrated oak. Tasted before bottling, the wine already shows impressive harmony and balance. The naturally small berries of Darmagi led the Gaja team to adapt their extraction in 2023. Expecting thicker skins after the warm growing season, they initially reduced the proportion of skins during fermentation to avoid excessive extraction. Instead, the vintage produced surprisingly thin skins, prompting a longer maceration that extended into December. The result is a Cabernet Sauvignon of uncommon finesse. – Monica Larner

The Gaja 2022 Barolo Sperss shows greater dimension and depth than the Conteisa, with a broader, more robust frame and a darker fruit profile to match. Black cherry and cassis are layered with earthy spice and mineral notes, while the palate is firmly structured with pronounced, chalky tannins that give the wine impressive drive and aging potential. Despite the concentration of the 2022 vintage, the wine remains beautifully balanced, with freshness carrying the fruit through the finish. As I taste the recent trio of hot vintages—2020, 2022 and now 2023—I find myself wondering whether wines of this caliber will ultimately be enjoyed at a younger age than previous generations. The 2023s are already remarkably expressive, whereas the 2022 Sperss feels destined for a longer evolution in bottle. – Monica Larner

The Gaja 2022 Barolo Conteisa opens to generous aromas of bright cherry and ripe red fruit that immediately signal the warmth of the vintage. Sourced from the Cerequio MGA, where the vines are now protected by overhead netting, the wine is broad and richly textured, with earthy undertones, sweet spice and ripe fruit layered over a classically structured palate. Chalky tannins and bright acidity provide plenty of support, although the wine remains noticeably more austere and tightly wound. The 2022 also carries a touch of youthful reduction on the finish. In personality, it recalls concentrated vintages such as 2000, 2005 and 2006, and I would expect its drinking window to begin later than is standard for this wine. – Monica Larner
